Representing Canada, Briana Carnegie skates with Black Ice Team at the World Synchronized Skating Championships
| For the past year Grade 11 student Briana Carnegie has been skating and training for Black Ice, a Senior Competitive Synchronized Skating Team which skates out of Richmond Hill. The team consists of twenty girls, sixteen of whom skate together in the program, doing the same moves in variations. Some elements are skated holding on, while others have no hold in an open block. Black Ice placed first at a competition in Kalamazoo, Michigan, first place in Milan, Italy and came second at the Canadian Nationals held in Mississauga. As the top two teams go on to represent Canada at the World Synchronized Skating Championships, Black Ice was one of the teams who represented Canada at this event. Worlds were recently held in Colorado Springs April 9th and 10th where Black Ice placed 4th out of 23 teams from all over the world. |

Two programs were skated: a short program skated to Mozart's Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (approximately four minutes long) and a Free Program skated to Moonlight Sonata (approximately 6 minutes long). There are certain elements to be skated in each program which make this judged sport very interesting to watch. Some exciting elements this sport has to offer include moves in the field, step sequences, traveling circles and wheels and of course, group/pair lifts.
The top five placings were as follows: Finland 1, Finland 2, United States of America 1, Team Canada 2 (Black Ice), Team Canada 1 (Nexxice). |
