14 students travel to Guatemala on PC’s Habitat for Humanity trip

From March 6th to the 15th, 14 intrepid Pickering College students, under the supervision of Lindsey Rife and myself, traveled to Guatemala to spend their holidays in a most productive way. They built two houses in El Rancho, a small village about 20 minutes car-travel from Guastatoya, the capital of the El Progreso province.

The work conditions were harsh with daily temperatures soaring to 45 degrees Celsius. The work sites were dusty and had frequent whiffs of burning plastics. Despite all of this they accomplished what they set out to do and made fast friends with the local kids, fellow construction workers and the Habitat organizers from Guatemala.

After completing their task they enjoyed a day of recreation in the old capital of Antigua where they had and took the opportunity to climb the volcano, Pacaya, to enjoy and be impressed by fiery streams of lava.

Living in Canada we all realize how fortunate we are and of the need to help our fellow man born in lesser circumstances.

I'm proud of this cohesive group of students.
