Clubs

There are a number of clubs for students to be involved in at Pickering College. In Junior School, clubs are offered on an informal basis during the recess time after lunch or during the sports period. Clubs that are offered vary from term to term, and from one year to the next as they are based on the interests of both students and faculty. Clubs could include chess, crafts, cooking, video-making, photography, astronomy, computer, games, public speaking and knitting.

In Senior School, some clubs are considered part of the co-curricular program, while others are on a more informal basis.

Youth Action Organization (YAO)

Youth Action Organization (YAO)

A student driven club, those with an interest in social justice and environmental issues gather to raise awareness and improve the school, local and global communities. YAO educates the student body on various issues and it participates in campaigns such as:

  • The Vow of Silence which raises awareness about those who have no voice in the world
  • Movember to raise money and awareness for prostate cancer
  • Chocolate Candy Grams which raises money to support a local charity.

As part of YAO, the Amnesty International Club educates the students about human rights issues that are happening in other countries. Over the year, they lead the students in participating in actions such as:

  • Write for Rights, on December 10th. Students write letters to support political prisoners and to governments that commit human rights violations.
  • A Taste for Justice is a campaign in which students sell fair trade chocolate, hot chocolate and coffee to raise awareness about fair labour practices.

Amnesty International is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights. Amnesty’s vision is of a world in which every person enjoys all of the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The Green Team

The Green Team

The Green Team focuses on promoting environmental awareness and improving the environment within the school and local community. Some of the initiatives this year are:

  • Running a Green energy audit for the school.
  • Green actions such as planting and banning plastic water bottles.
  • Green Week which is a week of activities to raise awareness for environmental issues.

Debating and Public Speaking

Debating and Public Speaking

Students on PC’s debate team prime themselves to give informed speeches on political issues we face in today’s society. The major difference between the Polikon club of today and that of 40 years ago is that the new team has gained Pickering College a full-fledged membership in the CIS Fulford Debate League. Pickering College is proud to finally have its hat in this particular intellectual arena.
