Continuous Learning at Pickering College

A message from Peter Sturrup, Head of School

On December 21, the Ontario government announced a province-wide shutdown for southern Ontario for 28 days, beginning at 12:01 a.m. on December 26, 2020.  Publicly funded and private elementary and secondary schools have been ordered to remain closed with Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 students resuming in-person classes on January 11 and high school students resuming in-person classes on January 25.

As our December 17 communication stated, we arranged for students to take home all essential learning resources.  We ask that you take a moment to review the continuous learning section of our website for additional information about online learning and in particular note that during online learning, the daily schedule is modified for each division, Junior School, Middle School and Senior School. Boarding remains open and students are supervised and supported by our boarding staff. The winter break program is underway. Boarding students continue to have the amenities they enjoy throughout the school year.

While we anticipate that in-person classes will resume on January 11, 2021 for students in Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8, and on January 25, 2021 for students in Grades 9-12, we will be following closely the direction of the Ministry of Education for any changes they may announce to the opening or closure of schools in the province and will communicate any updates to you. Information regarding any rebates will be communicated the week of January 4, 2021.

COVID-19 Safety Plan

Road to Re-Opening

Pickering College has developed this plan based on guidance issued by the Ministry of Health of Ontario, Ministry of Health and Long Term Care of Canada, Public Services Health and Safety Association, the World Health Organization, the Hospital for Sick Children, the Ministry of Education of Ontario and additional information provided by other provinces, states and countries.

The plan is based on following best practices as they are established with the most up to date research into COVID-19. The health, safety and well-being of our community is at the forefront of all of the decisions.

The COVID-19 global pandemic is an evolving situation and as we learn more we will continue to update and enhance our protocols.

Academic Plans

Boarding is OPEN!

We understand that the decision to have your child attend boarding school during these unprecedented times is a difficult one. This year, like every other year, our planning centres on providing your child with the safest boarding environment that will be their "home away from home" for the school year.

There are many changes that we will be implementing for the sake of student safety and enhanced cleaning and disinfecting. We are dedicated to our "family atmosphere and groups.” This year our Boarding Families will also act as the only cohort (small group) of boarding students with whom they will live closest to and share bathrooms.

We will continue to provide the caring, nurturing environment on which you have come to depend and provides opportunities for students in boarding to develop maturity, self-confidence, independence and resilience. We want to work together with you to ensure that your child has the best experience possible under these unique circumstances. Rest assured, we will care for your child with attention to their well-being and success.
