Advanced Functions Online Course

Course Description

Advanced Functions, Grade 12, University Preparation (MHF4U) This course extends students’ experience with functions. Students will investigate the properties of polynomial, rational, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions; develop techniques for combining functions; broaden their understanding of rates of change; and develop facility in applying these concepts and skills. Students will also refine their use of the mathematical processes necessary for success in senior mathematics. This course is intended both for students taking the Calculus and Vectors course as a prerequisite for a university program and for those wishing to consolidate their understanding of mathematics before proceeding to any one of a variety of university programs.

MC3RU Functions, Grade 11 University.  It is recommended that the student has attained 70% in this course.
The Advanced Functions course (MHF4U) must be taken prior to (or concurrently with) Calculus & Vectors (MCV4U)

This online course will begin on Saturday, June 27, 2020. The textbook, “Advanced Functions 12” (McGraw-Hill), can be purchased, new or used, from Pickering College's Bookstore. While flexible in scheduling, there will be due dates for summative assignments in order to help the student with time management. The due dates may be negotiated ahead of time for valid reasons (work schedule, camp, vacation, etc).  Microsoft OneNote will be the method through which materials are distributed to students and their OneNote notebook will be saved on Microsoft’s SkyDrive in order to allow access by the student and teacher from anywhere that they have internet access.

This course is best suited to students that are independent learners, self-motivated, have strong organizational and time management skills as well as a desire to master the concepts in preparation for the Calculus & Vectors course. It is recommended that students taking the summer course achieved over 75% in the MCR3U Functions course.

The final exam will be written at Pickering College on Thursday, September 10, 2020. Due to the nature of the course, you must achieve a 60% or higher on the exam to earn your credit.  Be sure you are able to meet this commitment before enrolling in the course.
