Students design supplies for local pig sanctuary
The Grade 2 class has partnered with Sweet Acres Pig Sanctuary. Their first visit was to meet the pigs and find out more about the sanctuary. The students asked several questions about how the organization operates and about their needs. They discovered that they operate solely on donations. It was recognized that the sanctuary needed new “pooper scoopers”, that their grooming tools were well worn and that the pigs love veggies and fruit.
The students noticed that not all of the pigs wanted human attention for grooming and they thought they could help. A few students remembered seeing scratchers at the Toronto Zoo for various animals during their recent trip. They decided they should build something similar for the pigs. They started with sketches and then made prototypes out of clay and LEGO. The final collaborative design was based on student prototypes using push brooms and a frame. They found extra lumber at Blue & Silver Farm and Mr. Verbeek offered to saw the lumber and help construct it. Students decorated the scratcher with drawings and the names of the pigs. The end result was stunning.
The Grade 2 class visited Sweet Acres for a second time to deliver the pig scratcher, pooper scooper, grooming supplies, and grocery bags filled with fruit and veggies. The plan is to donate extra vegetables the Grade 2s planted at Blue & Silver Farm when they are ready to harvest in the fall.
The sanctuary was delighted with the items and our students enjoyed spending time with the pigs grooming and feeding them the veggies. This was a valuable learning opportunity for our students where they had the pleasure to give back to their local community in a meaningful way.
Students earn ribbons in shot put, hurdles and races at CISAA championships
It was a fantastic season for the U11 Track team. With 60 students in training, everyone did their best in the month of May to prepare and compete at our three track and field meets – at the Toronto Track and Field Centre indoor facility, here on Memorial Field and at the CISAA track championships at York University. At the championships, 43 PC athletes competed in 11 different events. Congratulations to the following students who earned ribbons at the U11 Track & Field championships:
Brooke M.: Fourth place in U10 Girls 80 m Hurdles (Time 16.56 seconds)
Dylan C.: Fifth place in U11 Girls 200 m (Time 34.20 seconds)
Matthew Z.: Third place in U11 Boys Shot Put (Distance of 7.0 meters)
Alice Z.: Third place in U11 Girls 400 m (Time of 1:19:17)
Olivia F.: First place in U11 Girls Shot Put (Distance of 5.75 meters)
