Founded in 1842, Pickering College is a Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 co-educational day and boarding school located in Newmarket, Ontario. We are seeking a Director of Property and Facilities that is inspired by our mission and whose values align with the school.
As a member of the senior management team, and reporting to the Assistant Head of School, Finance and Operations, the Director of Property and Facilities plays a key role in shaping the school community. The Director provides leadership and management of the school’s facilities and properties, ensuring safe operations of buildings and our 35-acre property in 24 hours a day/7 day a week operation. The Director also has responsibility for managing the development and maintenance of our Farm property and oversees the facilities team.
This role is critical in strategic planning and management of the facilities. Responsibilities include long-term planning, development of new and existing facilities and overseeing the implementation of those plans. This position plans and executes both operating and capital budgets.
Currently a new 50,000 square foot academic building (West Lake House) is under construction with an anticipated opening date of February 2025.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee and provide leadership to a team of facility services staff including Team Leaders, Custodians, Housekeepers, Arena and Groundskeepers, part-time and weekend casual staff;
- Ensures that the property and facilities are clean, safe and secure at all times;
- Provide Facilities leadership and internal project management for the construction of West Lake House;
- Provide Facilities leadership through development and execution of strategic short and long-term plans in support of the school’s redevelopment plan of existing facilities;
- Oversee capital projects, including project management of construction, review timelines, budget, school interruptions and safety with Assistant Head of School, Finance and Operations;
- Develop, implement and evaluate an annual building and maintenance plan that supports the overall school objectives.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A university degree with Engineering certification or equivalent;
- Previous leadership experience, preferably in an educational setting;
- Minimum of 10 years of experience preferred working in Facilities or Maintenance capacity, with knowledge of mechanical, plumbing, construction, electrical, fire prevention systems and general maintenance;
- Demonstrated supervisory experience;
- Successful Operating and Capital budget responsibility;
- Project Management experience;
- Expertise in strategic planning and implementation;
- Demonstrated experience in implementation of organizational goals and plans;
- Strong relationship management skills;
- Demonstrated initiative, discernment and resourcefulness, and sound decision-making ability;
- Excellent organizational and management skills demonstrated in the ability to prioritize complex objectives and multiple priorities with overlapping deadlines;
- Flexibility to work some evenings and weekend, as required;
- Independent school experience an asset
- Experience with Occupational Health and Safety Act, and safe work practices;
- Valid Driver’s License.

Registered Nurse (part-time)

We are currently recruiting a Part-time, Permanent Registered Nurse for the Health Centre. The ideal candidate is a Registered Nurse, with previous nursing experience in a school, camp or instructional environment. The incumbent will be part of a team of nurses who oversee the Health Centre and Summer Camp day-to-day activities as well as respond to emergencies as needed and provide on call coverage. Hours will typically consist of 2 evenings per week (Wednesday and Thursday) plus 2 evenings on-call (Wednesday and Thursday), 1 weekend in every 3 on-call and full days for 2 weeks of summer camp with some flexibility. The environment is fast paced and requires an individual who is capable of multi-tasking and prioritizing while maintaining an excellent rapport with all constituents.
The Health Centre is responsible for the overall health and well-being of students and members of the school community. Major responsibilities include collaboration with other members of the PC community, administration of medication and vaccines, monitoring and assessing needs of students and staff, scheduling outside appointments as required, developing care plans to support student recovery from illness or injury, and communicating with parents and caregivers. Additional responsibilities include development and implementation of guidelines and protocols for infection prevention and control as it pertains to COVID-19, liaise with York Region Public Health and other external agencies and maintaining health centre supplies. The nursing staff reports to the Executive Director, Boarding and Health Services.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario;
- Previous Nursing experience in a similar environment is an asset;
- Previous experience dealing with children’s health matters;
- Current CPR, First Aid and AED training;
- Knowledge of Public Health Communicable Disease classifications, Canadian Immunization Schedule, childhood diseases, stages of child/adolescent growth and development;
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and computerized patient records;
- Excellent communication skills;
- Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills;
- Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information;
- Ability to work independently and as part of the school team;
- Health Centre administration experience.

Casual Custodian (8-10 HOURS per week)

Reporting to the Custodian Team Lead, we are recruiting for a casual custodian to work on Sundays from 3pm-11pm. There is an opportunity to support other shifts as required. The ideal candidate should be a responsible self-starter who is able to organize, complete all tasks with minimal supervision and within given time frames, as well as be able to work independently or in a team environment. In this role, you would be responsible for janitorial tasks (with the ability to lift up to 50 pounds), event/function set-up, minor repairs and preventative maintenance and security. This role includes prorated vacation and benefits effective immediately upon hire.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
- High School Diploma or equivalent and/or related work experience
- Flexibility to work outside of regular scheduled hours and from time to time to cover other shifts when needed (weekends/holidays) and perform various job tasks
- A working knowledge of modern janitorial methods and equipment
- Ability to complete work of a physical nature including heavy lifting, walking for extended periods of time and shovelling snow
- Updated training on carpet and floor care and associated equipment
- Ability to perform with minimal supervision
- Ability to follow instructions and to exercise tact and diplomacy

We are currently recruiting part-time weekend Arena Attendants. Reporting to the Manager of Facilities, the ideal candidate should be a responsible self-starter who is able to organize, complete all tasks with minimal supervision and within given time frames, as well as be able to work independently or in a team environment. The incumbent would be responsible for all janitorial, maintenance, arena, grounds and security duties. As an Arena Attendant, you would be responsible for all ice-making, janitorial, maintenance, security duties and public relations, specific to the arena.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
- A working knowledge of modern janitorial methods and equipment
- Ice resurfacing experience
- Ability to perform general maintenance, arena and grounds keeping duties with minimum supervision.
- Ability to follow instructions and to exercise tact and diplomacy.
- A demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English (both verbally and in writing).
- Ice-making experience in a small arena environment
- Safe operator training through ORFA (or similar) and/or from previous employment experience is preferred.

OVERVIEW:
Under the direction of the Executive Director, Boarding and Health Services, Boarding Dons provide support to the boarding students and program. Boarding Dons function as a team to ensure that the school’s Mission Statement is upheld.
Boarding Dons provide a supportive, caring environment where our students can grow, develop and thrive both personally and academically. This position will nurture healthy relationships between our students through evening programming and weekend activities. The Boarding Don will provide an environment that promotes emotional growth, personal development and maturation and academic success.
The Boarding Don is an active member of the boarding team who lives on campus in the residence on a 10-month contract. There are summer opportunities in our ESL Summer Camp for those that are interested.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Attend breakfast on a rotational schedule to monitor students and check residences to ensure that students are up and ready for the day.
· Work on a rotational basis to cover the residences in the evenings, overnight and weekends (including long weekends).
· Provide on call coverage to the residences.
· Live in the residence.
· Meal coverage for breakfast and dinner.
· Attend weekly staff meetings.
· Maintain a safe and supportive boarding program.
· Act as a “Family Head” for a smaller group of students within the residence.
· Act as a communication liaison for faculty and parents.
· Communicate on a regular basis with parents and custodians.
· Communicate regularly with the boarding team members.
· Support the academic development of students as needed.
· Ensure a safe boarding community.
· Liaise with the Health Centre staff to assist with any medical care of students as required.
· Assist with the Pickering College Co-Curricular Program to provide coaching or club leadership each term.
· Support the students academically through evening study coverage in assigned areas: Math, Science, English, ESL, Writing Lab, Middle School Study etc.
· Perform other duties as related, required or assigned.
