Clubs

In the Junior School, clubs are offered on an informal basis during recess time, after lunch or during the sports period. Clubs that are offered may vary from term to term, and from one year to the next, as they are based on the interests of both students and faculty members. Clubs could include activities such as chess, crafts, cooking, video-making, photography, astronomy, computer games, and knitting.

In Middle and Senior School, some clubs are considered to be part of the Co-curricular Program, while others meet on a more informal basis.

Youth Action Organization

Through this student-driven club, those with an interest in social justice and environmental issues can work together to raise awareness and improve the school, as well as local and global communities.

YAO educates the student body on various issues and has participated in campaigns such as:

Thanksgiving Food Drive
Cards for Seniors
Valentine’s Day Candygrams (raise funds for a local charity)

The Senior Green Team

The Senior Green Team focuses on promoting environmental awareness and improving the environment within both the school and local community. Chaired by an appointed student, some of the ongoing initiatives are:

Completing regular waste and energy audits for the school
Endeavouring to decrease our school’s food waste production
Implementing green actions such as planting and harvesting a garden, and banning plastic water bottles
Participating in Earth Week; a week of activities that raise awareness for environmental issues

Congratulations to Bryan (Grade 10) and Ethan (Grade 12) for being the recipients of the Farmer Environmental Stewardship Award in spring 2023. The recipients have the opportunity to direct a $2,000 grant towards a green project on campus or at Blue & Silver Farm.

The Farmer Environmental Stewardship Award recognizes one or more Pickering College students in Senior School who have implemented practical actions or increased awareness of environmental issues in the past year, on or off campus.

Pickering College has made a concerted effort to ensure green initiatives and environmentally-focused education is embedded into our culture. Pickering College has been awarded Platinum Certification by EcoSchools Canada for our sincere and effective approach to increasing environmental awareness and to decreasing our school's environmental footprint. Recreational Activities

Our non-competitive activities such as debate, theater, the arts, and recreational sports, focus on exposing students to new ideas, activities, and interests, while they develop self-awareness, self-confidence, and make new friends. With the guidance of our Global Leadership Program, our club leaders help enhance student learning by using a variety of resources and ideas often fostered by the students themselves.

These activities take part in three different terms: Fall, Winter and Spring. At the beginning of each term, students have the opportunity to switch their co-curricular activity.

The Polikon Society - Pickering College's Debate Team

Students on PC’s Debate Team prime themselves to give informed speeches on political issues we face in today’s society. The major difference between the Polikon Society of today and that of 40 years ago is that the current team has gained Pickering College a full-fledged membership in the CIS Fulford Debate League.
