Pickering College - Learning For Life. Creating The Future.
Students celebrating United Nations Day

Dear Members of the Pickering College Community,

With the announced departure of Head of School Peter Sturrup scheduled for the end of this academic year, the Board of Directors established a Search Committee to conduct a comprehensive and collaborative national and international search for his successor. Led by past Chair Kelly Mason and supported by Colleen Keenan, an executive search consultant with Odgers Berndtson, the Committee received thoughtful feedback from a broad representation of our community – alumni, staff, parents, and students – to identify the community’s aspirations for the future of our school.

Incoming Head of School Dr. Cinde Lock

I am thrilled to announce that the Pickering College Board of Directors has selected Dr. Cinde Lock to be the 14th Head of School at Pickering College.

Cinde comes to us with a wealth of teaching experience, pedagogical expertise, and leadership skills. An authentic leader, fully aligned with Pickering College’s mission and values, Cinde will help us to uphold our Quaker traditions and lead our growth in a transformative way.

Cinde began her career as a Math and Science teacher in the North York Board of Education. Over the past 30 years she has taught and served as an administrator in schools in the Ivory Coast, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Trinidad, and most recently South Korea. Cinde earned her Honours Bachelor of Science: Chemistry and Math, Bachelor of Education: Science and Math (I/S), Master of Education: Curriculum and Instruction, and a Ph.D. in Education and Mathematics from Queen’s University, as well as Principal Qualifications through the Ontario Principals’ Council. She is currently working toward her Certificate in School Management and Leadership through Harvard Business School and is a Trustee on the Board of AISH, the Academy for International School Heads.

In her current position as Principal of Branksome Hall Asia, the sister school to Branksome Hall in Toronto, Cinde has put her focus into building community, enhancing the physical and community spaces in the school, and developing the school’s curricular programs. Under her leadership, a Junior School kitchen and science area has been built, the Junior School playground has been enhanced, common spaces for day and boarding students have been created, a community café has been opened on site, and an Olympic-size ice skating rink will open this year.

Cinde is very passionate about student learning and is excited to become involved with the Global Leadership Program at Pickering College. In her current school, Cinde has worked with her team to ensure that learning is rooted in real-world contexts and that students are meaningfully engaged with people in the community so that they can, together, shape a better world.

During her time at Branksome Hall Asia, the school has nearly doubled its enrollment and advanced the academic standard of the school such that 95 per cent of its graduates now matriculate to the world’s top 100 universities and programs. Most recently, Branksome Hall Asia was celebrated as the ISC International School of the Year for 2021.

“I am so pleased that Cinde has been selected to be the next Head of Pickering College,” says Peter Sturrup, Head of School. “Her breadth of experience and qualifications will strengthen Pickering’s continued leadership in education. As importantly, her values, her belief in the potential of young people and her approach to looking for the best in all individuals will resonate deeply with our entire community now and in the future. Congratulations Cinde!”

Cinde will officially begin her time here at Pickering on August 8, 2022 but will be visiting Pickering College in November to begin her meetings with members of the PC community. Cinde is excited to join our community and to lead our school in the coming years.

This is an incredibly exciting moment for Pickering College. We are so very grateful to our retiring Head of School, Peter Sturrup, for his visionary leadership throughout the last 27 years and we will be honouring him in the spring. And now we are looking forward to having Cinde lead us into the future.

Please join me in welcoming Cinde to our community.
